IUSM Honor Code Mission Statement

The purpose of the Honor Code is to create an atmosphere of honesty, a culture of respect, and an environment of trust among students, residents, faculty, and staff of IUSM. It is our expectation that students and faculty alike will not only commit to abide by the guidelines set forth in the honor code, but that they will also incorporate those ideals into their belief system, both now and throughout their careers. In order to develop the skills required to operate in a self-governing profession, it is imperative that students and faculty learn to work together to resolve problems, and are held accountable for addressing any unethical behavior of their peers.

The primary goal of the Honor Code is not to discover and punish violators, but rather to create a culture at IUSM which will instill and reinforce these foundational ethical principles. Ultimately, the Honor Code is intended to serve as an ever-present reminder to students, residents, faculty, and staff of their commitment to exhibit professional and honorable behavior in all avenues of life, particularly as health care professionals. By their pledge to subscribe to and uphold this Honor Code, the students, faculty, and staff of the IUSM assume the responsibility for the effective application of the Honor Code, as well as the edification of their own academic, personal, and professional honesty and integrity.
