Pathology & Family Medicine Select Chairmen

John N. Eble, MD, MBA, became chairman of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine on October 1, 1999, after serving as acting chairman since 1998. He is chief pathologist for Clarian Health Partners-IU Hospital, Riley Hospital for Children and Methodist Hospital, and has been the chief pathologist for Roudebush VA Medical Center since 1982.

Dr. Eble sits on the editorial boards of Modern Pathology, Advances in Anatomic Pathology and the American Journal of Surgical Pathology. He edited the widely used textbook Urology Surgical Pathology, published in 1997. Dr. Eble earned his medical degree from IUSM in 1976, and served his residency in pathology from 1977 to 1980 at IUSM. He earned a master's in business administration from the IU School of Business.

Douglas B. McKeag, MD, joined the Department of Family Medicine as chairman in October 1999. He brings a unique level of expertise to the department; his primary area of interest is sports medicine in which he is nationally known as one of the architects of primary care sports medicine as a sub-specialty of family medicine. He has published many journal articles on his research in sports medicine, including a recent article he co-authored in the Journal of the American Medical Association on the long-term effects of head trauma in athletes. He is the sports medicine editor for www.drkoop.com - a Web site directed by former U.S. Surgeon General J. Everett Koop, MD.

Dr. McKeag helped found the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine in 1994 and served as the group's president for two years. He is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the North American Primary Care Research Group, the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine and the American College of Sports Medicine.
