Readers Survey 2001: Is That Your Final Answer?
"It's a constant reminder of my roots
An electronic subscription could save money
Sometimes I save
an article for my files if it is relevant to my practice
I
look at the titles and skim through to things that look interesting
It's a useful way to keep in touch and see how my former classmates
are doing
"
These are among the many comments IU Medicine magazine
received from readers who responded to a survey conducted late last
summer. We randomly selected and mailed questionnaires to 1,000
of our 14,000 alumni around the country. We asked a range of questions
about the content and usefulness of the publication and also sought
suggestions for improvements in editorial coverage on a variety
of issues.
Nearly nineteen percent of those surveyed returned
their questionnaires. "This is a surprisingly high response
rate since a three-percent response rate is typical for these kinds
of surveys," noted magazine publisher Pamela Perry. "We're
pleased that our alumni are interested enough to take time to suggest
ways to make the magazine more relevant to their colleagues."
The magazine's editorial board meets quarterly to
discuss and select content for upcoming issues. We asked our readers
how often they read standing features such as Message from the Dean,
News & Notes, Viewpoint and Alumni News. More than two-thirds
of respondents said they turn most often to the pages of News &
Notes and Alumni News.
Beginning with the fall 2001 issue, before the results
of this survey were tabulated, we expanded the Alumni News section,
changing its format to accommodate a growing number of submissions
from alumni.
We also wanted to know how well we cover IUSM's
tripartite mission of medical education, clinical care and research.
Generally, we received excellent-to-good ratings in all three categories,
although we got slightly lower marks in publishing clinical-related
articles.
