That's Entertainment!
The lights went down and the magic started. Music, dance, laughter
and a few poignant moments flowed freely among the standing-room-only
crowd at the March 23 Evening of the Arts program.
It was the 10th anniversary for Evening of the Arts, a variety
show that is completely planned and staged by IUSM students… with
a little help from their IUSM faculty and staff friends. In this
year's spotlight were acts ranging from rock music to ethnic dance
and classical ballet. Students' original photographs and other visual
arts were displayed outside the auditorium, awaiting the highest
bidders in a silent auction.
This year's event raised more than $7,100 to benefit medical programs
for the homeless and indigent in the Indianapolis area. IUSM students
often volunteer to assist with patient care as part of the School's
Health and Homelessness Project.
Student volunteers began forging plans for this year's event several
months in advance. Each event is solely organized and executed by
IUSM students.
As the time came for the curtain to lower on the first act, third-year
students Kevin Condict and Kevin Crawford paid tribute to their
fellow classmate and friend Joel Priddy, who died last year of non-Hodgkin's
lymphoma. Priddy's family, who was on hand for the show, has established
the Joel Priddy Endowment to help finance future Evening of the
Arts productions.
"Joel's witty, carefree style and love for life will live on through
this lasting legacy," said Ron Magliola, MS3, program director of
this year's Evening of the Arts. "The endowment will enrich the
lives of Indianapolis' homeless through the compassionate actions
of IU medical students. That's the best legacy any of us could hope
to leave the less fortunate."
