Groundbreaking Signals Start Of Research Institute

As the School grows in research dollars, faculty and programs, so must its facilities. The latest in the ongoing expansion is the IUSM Research Institute, scheduled for completion in the fall of 2002.

The formal groundbreaking for the 120,000-square-foot building was held November 2. The new four-story brick building will be similar to its neighbor, the IU Cancer Research Institute, dedicated in 1997. In fact, the same design plans are being used for the new building as a cost-saving measure.

Occupants of the new building will include three important groups. The Indiana Center of Excellence in Biomedical Imaging is a new initiative funded through grants from the Indiana 21st Century Technology Research Fund and the National Cancer Institute. Faculty from Indiana, Purdue and Notre Dame universities, as well as scientists from the pharmaceutical, radio-pharmaceutical and medical imaging industries will be involved in the research.

The Stark Neurosciences Research Institute, endowed by a $15 million gift from Dr. Paul and Carole Stark, will house neurosciences researchers from many disciplines, including medical and molecular genetics, chemistry, anatomy, pharmacology, psychiatry, pathology, physiology, computation, neurology, surgery and imaging.

Also housed in the new facility will be the Walther Oncology Center, a partnership program between the Walther Cancer Institute and IUSM. The goal of the program is to advance cutting-edge, basic scientific laboratory research that focuses on the cellular, biochemical and molecular biology of cancer.

Another contributor to the Institute is Clarian Health Partners, which has pledged $10 million.
