Terre Haute Center Professor Receives Carnegie Award
Mary T. Johnson, PhD, assistant professor of microbiology at IUSM's
Center for Medical Education at Terre Haute, was honored in late
2001 as teacher of the year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement
of Teaching and by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.
Dr. Johnson, who also holds an appointment as assistant professor
of life sciences at Indiana State University, was selected from
nearly 400 professors throughout the country. She's the first professor
at either IUSM or ISU to receive the honor.
"She goes out of her way to give our students good, hands-on
experiences in the classroom and lab," says Roy W. Geib, PhD,
assistant dean and director of the Terre Haute center.
Dr. Johnson has been instrumental in garnering support for the
BA/MD rural health initiative between IUSM and ISU and coordinating
health-related science education to middle and high school students
in the Terre Haute area and throughout the state.
