First Director Selected for Stark Institute
Gerry S. Oxford, PhD, will be the executive director of the newly
established Paul and Carole Stark Neurosciences Research Institute
and a professor of pharmacology and toxicology at the IU School
of Medicine.
Dr. Oxford’s selection ended several years of planning and
a search for a position made possible through Dr. Paul and Carole
Stark, whose $16 million gift in 2000 established an extensive neurosciences
research program at the School. His appointment is effective July
1.
The Institute, located in the Research II building on the Indiana
University-Purdue University Indianapolis campus, encompasses many
disciplines including medical and molecular genetics, chemistry,
anatomy, pharmacology, psychiatry, pathology, physiology, computation,
neurology, imaging and surgery.
Dr. Oxford currently directs the neurobiology curriculum at the
University of North Carolina and is distinguished professor in the
school’s Department of Cell and Molecular Physiology. He received
his doctorate at Emory University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship
at Duke University.
