IU Surgery Chief Honored for Pediatric Care
For more than three decades, Jay L. Grosfeld, MD, has pioneered
pediatric surgical care and medical education at the IU School of
Medicine and throughout Indiana. For these and other contributions,
Dr. Grosfeld has received one of the nation’s most prestigious
honors for pediatric surgery.
Dr. Grosfeld, chair of the Department of Surgery and Lafayette
F. Page Professor and director of the Pediatric Surgery Section,
was awarded the 2002 William E. Ladd Medical Medal by the American
Academy of Pediatrics’ surgical section, at the organization’s
annual meeting in Boston.
In 1972, he was appointed surgeon-in-chief at Riley Hospital for
Children, where he has built a highly regarded training program.
He’s the only pediatric surgeon to head the American Board
of Surgery, and he was vice chair of the Residency Review Committee
for Surgery.
A specialist in neonatal surgery and pediatric surgical oncology,
Dr. Grosfeld has written six textbooks and hundreds of scientific
articles and book chapters. He also is an honorary fellow of the
Royal College of Surgeons of England.
