1961
Dan Hibner, MD, is a family practitioner serving as medical director
of the South Carolina Facility for Special Needs and Disabilities.
He is an accomplished watercolorist who has won four national awards
in the past four years of exhibiting. He now has an annual one-man
art exhibit in a gallery each winter. He and his wife Rebecca have
two children, Kevin and Jill.
Bill Ringer, MD, is a family practitioner working for St. Vincent’s
Hospital in Williamsport, Ind. He enjoys bird watching, photography
and visiting wildlife refuges. Dr. Ringer and his wife Marilyn have
six children and 20 grandchildren.
Evrett Smith, MD, retired from his full-time radiology practice
at Marion General Hospital in 1991, but did temporary work until
2000. He is now fully retired from medicine but remains active in
farming and real estate. Dr. Smith and his wife Marilyn split their
time between their Marion, Ind. farm, their home in Sanibel Island
and their home on Lake Tellico, Tennessee. The Smiths have three
children: Mike is a biomedical engineer, Michelle is a missionary
and Mitchell is a photojournalist.
1944
James Sprengelmeyer, MD, retired from practicing internal and nuclear
medicine in 1995. Although he lives in Prescott, Ariz., he notes
that he is a “certified football couch potato and Bobby Knight
fan.” He enjoys Western art, history and international travel.
Richard “Dick” Wertz, MD, is a retired pathologist.
He owned an electronic publishing company until 1995, when it was
acquired by Lippincott. He and his wife Ursula live in Sacramento,
Calif., and enjoy traveling, philanthropic activities, their home
in Tahoe and the “endless challenges” of golf. Their
two daughters, Karin and Ingrid, are both medical students at the
nearby University of California Davis.
1966
Kenneth Ahler, MD, has been a family practice physician working
with four other IUSM graduates in Rensselaer, Ind., for 30 years.
He and his wife Margaret Ann have been married for 37 years and
have three children and eight grandchildren. Dr. Ahler has served
on the regional board of the Boy Scouts of America and on the board
of trustees of St. Joseph’s College.
Stuart Black, MD, is a neurologist specializing in headaches. He
is medical director of the Headache Center of the Presbyterian Hospital
of Dallas, Texas. He has also served as Dallas’ medical representative
on business trade missions around the world. Dr. Black is married
to Jan Hart Black; they have two daughters.
Ed Hannon, MD, is a diagnostic radiologist in Dubuque, Iowa. At
the end of 2002, he plans to begin working part time. He enjoys
bicycle touring, small tree farming, tennis and skiing. Dr. Hannon
and his wife Sharon have been married for 36 years and have two
sons, Brian and Gene.
Robert F. Jackson, MD, is a cosmetic/general surgeon in Marion,
Ind. He has made multiple trips to the Dominican Republic for short-term
missionary surgical work. In 2002, he served as president of the
American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. He and his wife have two sons,
both of whom are surgeons, and a daughter.
Leland “Lee” Matthews, MD, is an obstetrician/gynecologist
in Bloomington, Ind. He enjoys golf, jogging, tennis, traveling
and college sports. Dr. Matthews and his wife Marty have three sons:
Greg, Dan and Andy.
Kirby Tarry, MD, is a urologist in Columbus, Ind. He has “failed”
retirement twice and has traveled to Latvia, Honduras and Mexico
as a medical missionary. He and his wife Linda have four children.
1971
Donald Fix, MD, is an emergency medicine physician at Holland Community
Hospital in Grand Haven, Mich. He is enjoying “winding down”
professionally and building a vacation/retirement home on a northern
Lake Michigan island. Dr. Fix and his wife Barb have three grown
children, one of whom is a physician.
Darlene Sayers Kardatzke, MD, is a clinical assistant professor
of pediatrics at the IU School of Medicine and practices developmental
pediatrics at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. She enjoys
teaching Sunday school and camping. She and her husband Nyle have
two daughters and a son.
Jeffrey Kellams, MD, is a psychiatrist in Indianapolis. He served
as the medical director of Larue Carter Hospital in 1998 and as
president of the Indiana Psychiatric Society in 2000-2001. Dr. Kellams
and his wife Connie have two teenaged sons.
Wesley Todd, MD, is a neurologist in Kalamazoo, Mich. He managed
the clinical team that developed Zyvox, the first new class of antibiotics
to reach hospitals in 35 years. In 2000, the drug was named the
year’s best new pharmaceutical product by R&D Directions.
Dr. Todd and his wife Janet Waring Johnson Todd, PhD, have three
children, all of whom enjoy winter sports and summer water activities
available in Michigan.
Margaret Berry Wiley, MD, retired from her internal medicine practice
in Indianapolis in February 2000. Her husband Mike passed away in
September 2000. She has two stepdaughters and four grandchildren
as well as an award-winning Norwich Terrier named Ernie. Dr. Wiley
enjoys traveling, drawing and learning computers. She invites classmates

1981
Mary Ann Knesevich, MD, practices psychiatry in Dallas, Texas. She
and her husband David Wallace have two young children, both of whom
are “in charge of the house.”
Kinga Kocsis, MD, is a family practice physician in Shakogee, Minn.
She and her husband Dave Brown have a daughter Elizabeth and twins
Katelyn and Vincent. To spend more time with her family, Dr. Kocsis
decided in December 2000 that she would no longer deliver babies.
Prior to that, she had delivered 50-80 babies each year for more
than 15 years.
Carl Otten, MD, is the department chief of occupational medicine
at Kaiser Permanente in Avon, Ohio. In 1995, Dr. Otten became board
certified in occupational medicine and also earned his master’s
degree in public health. He and his wife Mattie have four children.
Their oldest son Ryan is a student at IUSM.
Bruce M. Psaty, MD, PhD, is a professor of medicine, epidemiology
and health service at the University of Washington in Seattle, Wash.
He is also co-director of the Cardiovascular Health Research Unit.
Dr. Psaty’s research activities focus on drug safety, including
the adverse effects of calcium antagonists and drug-gene interactions
and the risk of myocardial infarction. He and his wife Barbara spend
a great deal of time traveling to watch their daughter Sarah Elizabeth
participate in her middle-school events, including plays, soccer,
basketball, cross-country and track.
Debra Reinking, MD, is an anesthesiologist living in Redwood Shores,
Calif. She and her husband, Peter Rothschild, MD, have three daughters:
Annie, Cynthia and Karen. Dr. Reinking and Dr. Rothschild jointly
edited the textbook Open MRI published by Lippincott, Williams and
Wilkins.
1991
Ingrid Aufderheide Carlson, MD, practices ophthalmology in Colorado
Springs, Colo. She enjoys pottery, bicycling and hiking in the mountains.
She is married to Jon Carlson.
Kalen Carty-Kemker, MD, is board certified in family practice medicine
and serves as chairman of the Department of Obstetrics at Washington
County Memorial Hospital in Salem, Ind. She is a member of her local
school board as well as a member of the board of directors for the
Indiana Academy of Family Physicians. She and Stephen Kemker, MD
‘90, have three young children and enjoy church activities,
Cub scouting and backpacking.
Lisa David, MD, is an assistant professor in Wake Forest University’s
Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. She is also an
associate program director for the department. She completed her
craniofacial fellowship in Paris, France, from 1999-2000. She enjoys
traveling and teaching. She is married to Patrick Mattingly; they
live in Clemmons, N.C.
Li-Fen Lien Chang, MD, is responsible for starting a new radiation
oncology program in Lafayette, Ind. She and her husband Tien-Chien
Chang have two teenaged sons.
Michael Khamis, MD, is in diagnostic radiology private practice
in Richmond, Ind. He and his wife Kathleen have two young children
and three dogs. They have recently renovated their 80-year old home.
Dr. Khamis enjoys collecting medical antiques and building model
railroads.
1996
Ronald Eich, MD, is an emergency medicine physician in Holt, Mich.
He completed his obligation with the United States Army in 1999
and was awarded the Spurgeon
H. Neel Flight Surgeon of the Year Award. In addition to his career,
Dr. Eich enjoys baseball, the martial arts and various other sports.
He and his wife Ann have a young daughter who has competed nationally
in baton twirling.
Deborah Phillips Hall, MD, recently joined a sole practitioner
in pediatrics in Corydon, Ind. She and her husband Steve Hall have
a young daughter. They enjoy church activities and participate in
a folk music group that provides music for their weekly mass.
Alicia “Ali” Courtney Leedy, MD, is a pediatrician
in Noblesville, Ind. She and her husband Tim Leedy, who is the brother
of Michelle Timmons, MD ’96, have two children. Dr. Leedy
enjoys camping, hiking and skiing.
David McLaren, MD, is an ophthalmologist at the United States Naval
Hospital in Naples, Italy. Dr. McLaren has been on assignments in
Hawaii, San Diego and Italy and has gone on humanitarian missions
to Tanzania and the Kingdom of Tonga.
Dr. McLaren enjoys golf and photography. He and his wife Kimberly
McNeil, MD ’91, have a young son. Dr. McNeil is a radiologist
at the naval hospital and enjoys motorcycling, cycling and swimming.
Ty Montgomery, MD, is a radiologist at Major Hospital in his hometown
of Shelbyville, Ind. He enjoys playing the guitar, riding his ATV,
lifting weights, running and working outdoors. Dr. Montgomery and
his wife Tiffany have three young sons.
Eric Seward, MD, is an obstetrician/gynecologist in Sturgeon Bay,
Wis. During his residency in Saginaw, Mich., he was twice selected
as teacher of the year. He recently began solo practice in association
with a multi-specialty group. Dr. Seward and his wife Jaimie have
three young children. When he isn’t “knee deep in kid
stuff,” he enjoys playing baseball and the guitar, and running.
