NASA and State High on Surgeon's Research

Stephen Trippel, MD, professor of orthopaedic surgery, has received a NASA Space Act Award from the agency’s Inventions and Contributions board. He and his colleagues at Purdue University and Zimmer Holdings, an orthopaedics company, also recently received $2 million from Indiana’s 21 st Century Research and Technology Fund.

The NASA ward recognizes scientists whose inventions or scientific and technical contributions have helped NASA achieve its aeronautical and space goals. Dr. Trippel’s research involved the enhancement of tissue engineering by the transfer of a growth factor gene.

The 21st Century grant will be used to hope to develop a method to restore cartilage damaged by injury or aging.
