1939
Ted L. Grissell, MD, of New Smyrna Beach, FL, received the Legion of Merit award, one of
the U.S. Army's most prestigious awards, in December 1997 for his service during World War II.
Dr. Grissell practiced in Indianapolis for 42 years before retiring to Florida.
1952
Thomas G. Samter, MD, retired from the Sinai Samaritan Medical Center and the practice of
pathology in December 1997. He and his wife Hiroko spend their summers in Milwaukee and their
winters in Hollywood, Fla. He enjoys bicycling, walking and reading murder mysteries in English,
Japanese and German.
1953
Billy Bauman, MD, retired from his pathology practice in July 1997. Currently he is serving
as a consulting forensic pathologist to attorneys and as a backup forensic
pathologist to the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory.
Matthew Fujawa-Deren, MD, a retired anesthesiologist, lives on a mountainside in North Carolina. He flies a 150H-Cessna, paints in oils and watercolors, and cooks and bakes in his free time.
Wayne Schrepferman, MD, enjoys traveling, fishing, gardening and woodworking in his retirement. Once a year, he travels to Honduras for the Lions Eyeglass Project. He also is a bus driver guide and National Park Ranger in Alaska and is active with Habitat for Humanity and Elderhostel programs.
1958
Wendell A. Riggs, MD, is a retired pediatrician in Lafayette, Ind., who created a community health clinic for the
poor and underserved in 1988. He has been a Tippecanoe County health oficer since 1986. He has three sons and six
gradchildren. His father graduated from IUSM in 1928 and his son graduated from IUSM in 1998.
1963
Anthony R. Dowell, MD, has a private internal medicine practice in Muncie, Ind. He also is
the program director for geriatric medicine and supervises the geriatric medicine fellowship at
Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie.
Mary Mericle Ferree, MD, retired in November 1996 but still consults part time, saying, "My psychotherapeutic efforts are limited now to contractors, painters and cleaning people as we try to get our house in shape after years of 'no time.'" She has a son and two daughters.
Harold Harsin, MD, retired in June 1996 from St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Belleville, Ill., where he was medical director. He owns and operates a small Christmas tree farm and spends his free time woodcarving.
Beverly Zelt, MD, specializes in chronic pain management. She is medical director of the Preventive and Rehabilitative Medical Center at the Burns Clinic in Petoskey, Mich. She has two children and two grandchildren and enjoys fishing, woodworking, traveling and gardening.
1968
James V. Faris, MD, is the chief of cardiology at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical
Center in Indianapolis and is president-elect of the Indianapolis Medical Society. He has six
children and is an assistant scoutmaster.
Jane Howard, MD, is a cardiologist with Indianapolis-based Nasser, Smith & Pinkerton Cardiology. The Indiana Affiliate of the American Heart Association presented her the Medical Professional of the Year Award.
Peter Leininger, MD, is the owner of Canyon Springs Golf Course in San Antonio, Tex. Originally a urologist, he is now working on his third career - real estate development. He has five children, ages 11 to 29.
Douglas A. Triplett, MD, is associate dean and director and professsor of pathology at IUSM's Muncie Center for Medical Education. He also serves as vice president and director of medical education at Ball Memorial Hospital. He has authored/edited eight books and authored more than 100 scientific papers. He resides in Muncie, Ind., and has two children.
1969
Harvey Ziessman, MD, is director of nuclear medicine and professor of radiology
at Georgetown University Hospital. He has been on the faculty at Georgetown since 1984
and became director of nuclear medicine in 1991. His daughter Jennifer is a junior at
Georgetown. Dr. Ziessman and his wife Karen Burke live in Takoma Park, Md.
1978
Jim Gilman, MD, is a deputy commander for clinical services at Darnell Army Community
Hospital in Fort Hood, Texas. It is the Army's largest community hospital. He previously
served as chief of cardiology and cardiology program director at Brooke Army Medical Center.
He has three daughters, ages 8, 12 and 18. His biggest disappointment is that IU (basketball)
hasn't won another national title in 11 years.
Eileen Mead Kasten, MD, works for the Bureau for Disability Determination in Columbus, Ohio, and as a consultant evaluating pediatric claims for SSI benefits. She also works for Children's Hospital and as a consulting pediatrician for the Well Child Clinic at the Logan County Health Department. She has many cats, dogs, goats and geese.
Janell Seeger, MD, is a medical oncologist at Norton Cancer Treatment Center in Louisville, Ky. She was a tenured professor at the University of Louisville for 10 years and serves on the board of directors for Hospice. Her husband just finished 20 years as State Medical Examiner and is now director of the clinical forensic medicine program at U of L, the only one of its kind in the country.
1979
Willie Cochran Jr., MD, is a senior partner in a multispecialty surgery group in suburban
Atlanta and is chief of surgery at Henry Medical Center in Stockbridge, Ga. He and his wife Rebecca
reside in McDonough, Ga., with their daughter Deidre. His oldest daughter Erica attends Miami
University in Oxford, Ohio, and son Kenneth is a high school senior.
1983 Donna Mumma, MD, works part time in a small pathology practice in Colorado Springs. She is board certified in cytopathology and was the first female president of the Colorado State Pathology Society. She has two children, Kristen, 5, and Scott, 7. She enjoys golf, skiing and biking, and has placed in several hill-climb running races.
Anne Henley Wright, MD, has joined the ophthalmology practice of Lanter Eyecare in Indianapolis. She practiced the past 10 years in Kokomo, Ind.
1988
Ronald A. Bays, MD, is in private practice with his wife Susan in Saginaw, Mich. He
practices vascular surgery and his wife practices general surgery. They both have clinical
appointments with Michigan State University College of Medicine. Dr. Bays currently is
the only fellowship-trained vascular surgeon in northern Michigan and is ready for others to join
him.
Christopher Day, MD, is a staff diagnostic radiologist at Harrison County Hospital in Corydon, Ind. He served in the U.S. Navy as an intern, resident and staff radiologist for nine years. He spent two of those nine years stationed in Japan and "enjoyed every day of it!" He has two children, Erica, 2, and Christopher, 9.
1991
Mark Fesenmyer, MD, is completing a gastroenterology fellowship at the University of
Minnesota. He will join a practice in Racine, Wis.
Brian Halloran, MD, completed a seven-year general surgery residency at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha and is now a fellow in vascular surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. He and his wife Cathy have two children, Maggie, 4, and Michael, 9 months.
