Purdue Pharmacy Program Collaborates
With IUSM In Training And Research
As medical therapies become more complex, so does the importance of interaction between physicians and pharmacists. IU School of Medicine and the Purdue University School of Pharmacy have collaborated in research and patient care for more than two decades. During their sixth year of training at Purdue, one hundred future pharmacists work closely with medical students at IUSM. The experience lets each group learn more about the other's role in patient care.
To accomplish this collaborative effort, fifteen Purdue pharmacy faculty members are now housed in laboratories on the seventh floor of Wishard Hospital. Several have begun or continue research collaboration with their IUSM colleagues in medicine, pharmacology and other departments. According to Steven Abel, PharmD, who chairs the Department of Pharmacy Practice, partnerships with medical students, post-doctoral students, physician investigators and clinicians are crucial to the training of top-notch pharmacists and to the research of pharmacy faculty. Physicians, he says, benefit as well.
