George R. Horton Sr., MD, retired in December 1986. He and his wife Jane now live at the Country Club of North Carolina, Pinehurst, N.C.

1943
Betty J. Dukes, MD, and her husband Joe Dukes, MD, practiced medicine in Dugger, Ind., for 45 years and are now retired and live in Bloomington, Ind. It is estimated that Dr. Betty Dukes delivered more than 10,000 babies in the Greene and Sullivan county area.

1955
Paul R. Santrock, MD, retired from his family practice in May 1998. Dr. Santrock ended his 42-year family practice in Cross Lanes, W.Vir. He plans to stay in Cross Lanes and be more active in his church, the Baptist Temple in Charleston, and to spend more time playing the piano for his own enjoyment. He and his wife also plan to travel.

1956
John F. Williams, MD, cardiologist and director of Wishard Health Services in Indianapolis, Ind., has retired after eight years at the helm of WHS. Dr. Williams and his wife Jan have no specific plans for retirement. Golfing with friends and being active doing volunteer work are on their agendas. Dr. Williams will continue to stay active in health care and will continue as a board member of the Wishard Foundation and Visiting Nurse Service.

Edward R. Bakos, MD, retired from his practice of thirty years at Western Reserve and resides in Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

1959
James B. Gillick, MD, Arthur A. Hockey, MD, and J. Victor Vore, MD, attended their 34th class reunion in Cannon Beach, Ore. These friends have been meeting since the mid-1960s. The friendship has functioned as support group, book discussion forum, and, now that nearly all are retired, travel and future planning group. Drs. Gillick and Vore made their 40th medical class reunion this May.

1963
John E. Pless, MD, is still engaged in the full-time practice of forensic pathology at IUSM, where he is the Culbertson Professor of Pathology and associate chairman of education. In July 1998, Dr. Pless was on the team of forensic specialists from several countries who gathered in Nigeria to help find the cause of Nigerian political prisoner Moshood Abiola's death. (Abiola, who had not been in good health, collapsed and died during meetings with Nigerian and American officials that were called to arrange his release from prison.) Heart problems were cited as the cause of death. Dr. Pless says, "It was an awesome responsibility, and yet the process went remarkably well considering the circumstances."

1966
Harry C. Wolf, MD, recently retired from his family medical practice and now teaches part-time at the St. Vincent Hospital Family Practice Residency Training Program in Indianapolis, Ind. Dr. Wolf's son David Wolf, also an IUSM alumnus, is an astronaut, recently having spent four months on the Russian Space Station Mir.

1968
Elaine H. Waiss, MD, of Munster, Ind., celebrates 31 years as a physician this year. Her daughter Elizabeth Blok works as a space operations supervisor at L.B. Johnson Space Center (NASA) Houston, Tex. William D. Cutshall, MD, has passed the certification examination for hospice and palliative medicine. He now is certified to help with pain management and care for terminally ill patients. Dr. Cutshall is associate director of the hospice program in Bloomington, Ind., and director of the Cook Group Family Health Center, estab-lished in 1993. He also has been appointed as regent for the state of Indiana by the International College of Surgeons.

1976
Mark W. McClure, MD, FACS, currently resides in Raleigh, N.C., where he continues his practice of urology. Dr. McClure established one of the first urology practices in the U.S. to offer both conventional and complementary medicine.

1980
Joseph D. Sanchez, MD, has been named medical director of The Health Alliance's new OccNet center in Sharonville, Ohio. Dr. Sanchez has specialized in emergency medicine for the last 16 years and recently started working in occupational medicine.

1981
William H. Beeson, MD, of Carmel, Ind., served as the 1998 president for The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS). Dr. Beeson was presented with the prestigious President's Award in 1993 for his contributions to cosmetic surgery.

1983
Thomas R. Mather, MD, ophthalmologist, formerly from West Lafayette, Ind., now resides in Charleston, S.C., with his wife Carmi and sons Drew, 11, Wesley, 6, and Layne, 4. Today Dr. Mather performs a range of eyelid surgeries. Some of his procedures repair droopy eyelids, lift eyelids, improve tear drainage, remove cancerous tumors and reduce the bulging caused by thyroid problems. When he is not practicing medicine, he can be found at his 25-acre farm in Awendaw. It's located near the Francis Marion National Forest and Cape Romain Wildlife Refuge. Stephen F. Levinson, MD, was recently appointed chairman of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Rochester. Dr. Levinson, formerly known as F. Stephen Vinson, and his wife Susan J. Levine legally combined their last names when they married in 1985. Following his residency at Stanford, Dr. Levinson accepted a position at the National Institutes of Health, where he expanded the research he had begun at IUSM. His work, which uses ultrasound to study the biomechanics of muscle, took him to Tokyo Institute of Technology, for the summer of 1990, and ultimately to University of Rochester, a world leader in biomedical ultrasound. Dr. Levinson has been there since 1992 and holds joint appoint-ments in the Medical School and in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

1984
Rebecca E. Galante, MD, is practicing internal medicine in Hammond, Ind. She also teaches a course on medical history and physical diagnosis at the IU Northwest Medical Center.

1985
Tracy Gage Carmellini, MD, completed two years of general surgery residency at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, Conn., and a four-year residency in radiology at Hartford Hospital. She has a six-year-old daughter and a three-year-old son.

1987
James B. Gardner, MD, has been named president of Cook Group Inc.'s Cook Family Health Center. Dr. Gardner is responsible for the administration of the center, which opened in 1993. The center serves as a primary health care provider to Cook employers and their families. Prior to joining Cook Family Health Center, Dr. Gardner was a vice president of Unity Physician Group.

1988
Michael S. Scheeringa, MD, is practicing in New Orleans at Tulane University School of Medicine. He is an assistant professor in child and adolescent psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry and Neurology. This year he was awarded a five-year research grant from the National Institute of Mental Health to study post-traumatic stress in pre-school children. Michael L. Kramer, MD, is a partner in Orthopaedics Indianapolis. He has four children, ages 5, 7, 10 and 12.

1990
Mark A. Muckway, MD, has joined the staff of Hendricks Com-munity Hospital. He is a neurologist and co-president of Comprehensive Neurologic Services, an organization founded and developed by Dr. Muckway and his partner. He resides in Danville, Ind. Sara Hatfield Steelman, MD, is currently working in the pediatric emergency department at the University of Chicago Children's Hospital. She also is raising her two young children, Grant and Trent.

1991
Matthew Hicks, MD, returned to Fort Wayne in July 1997. He has completed a fellowship in trauma orthopaedics and has been practicing at Fort Wayne Orthopaedics.

1992
Michael J. Louthan, MD, is a fourth-year anesthesia resident at IU Medical Center. His wife Mary is a part-time nurse at a Noblesville pediatrician's office. They are parents of two-year-old twins. Mark M. Hamilton, MD, of Carmel, Ind., has joined Perkins Facial Plastic Surgery in Clay Town-ship. After a surgical internship at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, he completed his residency program in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at St. Louis University, and then went on to complete a fellowship through the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He is certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and is also a member of the American Academy of Otolaryng-ology-Head and Neck Surgery. Hal S. Dickson, MD, is a board certified neurologist working at Eastern Indiana Neurology in Muncie, where he and his wife live. Brian Crites, MD, has finished his orthopaedic surgery residency at Duke University and now is at the University of Maryland Medical Center for a sports medicine fellow-ship. He will be practicing with the Baltimore Ravens. His goal is to join the staff at the Center for Hip And Knee Surgery in Mooresville, Ind. Daniel J. Fagan, MD, has completed his residency in internal medicine and is currently a staff physician at Cook Family Center in Bloomington, Ind. Dan is married and has three children.

1993
Angela T. Meyer, MD, completed her residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation in June 1997 from the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. Dr. Meyer and her husband Joe moved back to Indiana-polis and had their first child Teresa Rose in September 1997. Lawrence C. McBride, MD, recently joined the otolaryngology- head and neck surgery practice of Drs. Sibbitt, White, Pugh, and Sarpa in Bloomington, Ind. He is practicing out of three offices: Bloomington Hospital, Southern Indiana Surgery Center and an office in Bedford, Ind. Dr. McBride completed a five-year residency at the IU Medical Center in June 1998.

1994
Nate Ross, MD, has joined the private practice group of Ob/Gyn South in Birmingham, Ala. He did his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Medical University of South Carolina.

1995
Joe Lauer, MD, completed his internal medicine residency at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Va. He has begun a cardiology fellowship at IU School of Medicine.

1997
Judy Zacher, MD, is in her second year of residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Sinai Hospital in Detroit. Dr. Zacher says she is work-ing hard but enjoying it very much.
