New Cancer Workshop Explores The Patient - Physician Dialogue

"My Life, My Choice: Creating Effective Communication for the Cancer Experience" was held March 13 in Indianapolis. Seventy-five cancer patients and family members attended the first session of this community workshop developed and moderated by Larry Cripe, MD, assistant professor of medicine, in collaboration with The Wellness Community of Indiana.

Participants met in large and small discussion groups facilitated by physicians, nurses, social workers and chaplains to discuss the communication process between patient and health care providers. Presentations throughout the day focused on creating dialogue that can result in patients receiving information to help them make informed decisions. End-of-life issues were also addressed.

Participants were asked to complete an anonymous survey about their communication experiences with health care providers during their cancer treatment. Dr. Cripe and his colleagues will analyze the responses and report them to colleagues who treat cancer patients with the hope of improving patient care.
