Swiss Hypertension Researcher To Receive 2001 Beering Award At IU School of Medicine INDIANAPOLIS -- The 2001 Steven C. Beering Award for Outstanding Achievement
in Biomedical Science will be presented to Bernard C. Rossier, M.D.,
professor of pharmacology and toxicology of the Institut de Pharmacologie
et de Toxicologie at the Université de Lausanne, Switzerland.
Dr. Rossier's research involves genetic cloning and characterization
of the amiloride-sensitive sodium channel, known as EnaC. His research
is pioneering work with implications for all individuals with hypertension. Dr. Rossier was made an Honorary Foreign Member of the American Academy
of Arts and Science in 1999, the same year that he was awarded an honorary
doctorate, Doctor Honoris Causa, by the University Pierre et Marie Curie
in Paris. Presented annually, the Beering Award honors an internationally recognized individual for contributions to the advancement of biomedical or clinical science. The award was named in honor of Steven C. Beering, M.D., who served as dean of the IU School of Medicine from 1974 to 1983, then as president of Purdue University for 17 years, retiring in 2000.
