IU Simon Cancer Center Offers Free Prostate Cancer Screenings Sept. 16

INDIANAPOLIS — Do you know that prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer among men in America?

Only skin cancer is more common, according to the American Cancer Society. Out of every three men who are diagnosed with cancer each year, one is diagnosed with prostate cancer.

If diagnosed in the early stages, prostate cancer can be readily treated. To help men catch it in the early stages, the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center, in conjunction with the American Cancer Society, is offering free screening examinations for prostate cancer.

The screenings are 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 16 in the Urology Clinic, room 340, at the IU Simon Cancer Center at 535 Barnhill Drive. Parking is available in the Vermont Street Garage on the Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis campus.

Men will have a small amount of blood drawn for the PSA (prostatic specific antigen) test, which can detect prostate cancer in its early stages, and a digital rectal exam by urologists who are volunteering their time. A PSA test combined with a DRE offers the most effective screening for prostate cancer. Each screening should take less than 15 minutes.

Screenings are limited to the first 100 men who call (317) 274-6988 to schedule an appointment.
