This Week on Sound Medicine

INDIANAPOLIS — This weekend, Nov. 14 and 15, Sound Medicine host Barbara Lewis and guests will discuss large confined animal feeding operations, controlling insect populations and new treatments for bipolar disorder.

The program:

Robert Martin of the Pew Campaign on Human Health and Industrial Farming will explain the concerns that livestock in large confined animal feeding operations are being fed antibiotics which are leading to more resistant strains of bacteria.

Edward Kravitz, Ph.D., a Harvard neurobiologist, will discuss his discovery that female fruit flies send a signal to males when they don’t want to mate and how this could lead to clues about controlling insect populations and insect-borne diseases such as malaria.

Nathan Wolfe, Ph.D., Lorry I. Lokey Visiting Professor in Human Biology at Stanford University and director of the Global Viral Forecasting Initiative, will his discovery on where malaria originated which hopefully could lead to a cure.

Trisha Suppes, M.D., Ph.D., professor of psychiatry and behavioral science at Stanford University School of Medicine, will discuss the new treatment guidelines for bipolar disorder issued by the American Psychological Association.

Marie Savard, M.D., ABC Medical News contributor, will critique the Holmes-Rahe Life Stress Inventory and will suggest improvements.

In this week’s Sound Medicine “Checkup,” Jeremy Shere, Ph.D., will explore shower head germs.
